A man was found lying in the road with serious head injuries after a night out with friends.
Daniel May, 23, from Heathfield, was discovered on the A265 Burwash Road, Heathfield, close to the junction with Newick Road at 11.15pm on Sunday.
Friends believed he had been walking home from the Crown pub, Heathfield, where he had spent the evening.
Mr May was taken to the Kent and Sussex Hospital and later transferred to specialist unit Hurstwood Park in Haywards Heath for surgery.
Police are keen to speak to the drivers of two cars seen in the area shortly before police arrived.
