Police are investigating after a man fired a shotgun into the air at a block of flats.

Neighbours reported hearing a loud bang and screaming on Friday night behind flats at Hoddern Avenue in Peacehaven.

Armed officers were called to the block of 20 properties and the area was cordoned off for more than two hours.

A resident, who declined to be named, said the man fired a single shot and several other men then attacked him.

He heard one of them shout but he did not know what they were fighting about.

He said: "We heard a shot being fired although we didn't realise it was a shotgun at the time.

"I have never heard one going off before. It was so loud and it sounded like a rocket going off.

"I think the police at first thought the man with the gun was injured but he was walking when they took him away.

"My wife asked the police if it was okay to walk the dog. They told us a shotgun had been recovered and that the situation was contained and no one was injured."

Other neighbours said they had heard a commotion from the area but did not see anything.

A police spokeswoman said: "At 9.25pm an incident occurred at Hoddern Avenue in Peacehaven and a shotgun was discharged.

"Police attended and a local man was arrested and is helping police with their inquiries."

The spokeswoman said: "The shotgun was recovered and no one was injured.

"Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident."
