Well done to Jez MacDonald for his letter (August 5) highlighting the "Victor Meldrew" attitude of some readers.

As a Brightonian from birth, I am continually saddened to read of people moaning about our city when there is a lot to celebrate.

While I appreciate there are things wrong here, it doesn't do any harm to occasionally sing praise for where we live.

Our listeners came up with a number of reasons why they loved Brighton and Hove.

We have a fantastic football team and, hopefully, a brand new stadium for them to play in soon.

There are many fine venues within Brighton and Hove: Pubs and clubs for the younger residents and many parks, greens and even the South Downs just up the road for those who like to escape the hubbub.

The cultural diversity within Brighton is unrivalled and it is heartening to see the majority of people willing to accept other people for who they are, whatever their background or beliefs.

There is a buzzing tourist industry, a smart shopping centre, the quaintness of the Lanes and, as one of our listeners pointed, out "it's like the best bits of London by the sea".

We love the characters who appear around the city centre: The bongo players and jugglers on the beach. It's a laid-back place but people have a lot of time for each other.

Keep smiling and remember the grass is rarely greener on the other side.
