Worthing rider Steve Woodbridge set a hot pace to win Brighton Excelsior's 25-mile time trial at Steyning.

Although his team-mates, Tom Walker and Andy Payne, both finished just outside the top ten the GS Stella trio won the team event.

Woodbridge recorded 56min.52sec to beat Surrey rider Gary Walls (Charlotteville) by a clear 40 seconds, but only three seconds covered the next three riders.

Wells clocked 57min.32sec, Mark Brambleby (Feltham) came home in 57min.33sec for third place and Sussex rider Dave Pollard (In Gear) was fourth with 57min.35sec.

Other Sussex riders to make the top ten were Geoff Smith (Sussex Nomads), who was eighth in 1hr.0min.11sec, Lewes rider Carl Whitaker (In Gear) ninth in 1hr.0min.20sec and Simon Prior (Eastbourne Rovers) tenth in 1hr.0min.29sec.

Former Lancing rider Andy Slater is the proud holder of a Commonwealth Games silver medal after the England team finished second to Australia in the final of the team sprint at the Manchester Velodrome.

Winchester star Danny Axford and Shaun Reed (Eastbourne Rovers) finished first and second in the 14th Goodwood Gallop at the motor circuit. Hastings rider Martin Markowski (VC Bayeux) took third place.

Crawley rider Angela Brown (Twentieth Century Airports) won the women's event in the Redmon CC ten-mile time trial. Brown, who only started serious cycling this year, recorded 24min.27sec in what was her first ever open event.

Michael Thyer (Southwater Cycles) finished second in the Southern Area Grand Veterans' mountain bike race and Dave Clark (Brighton Mitre) placed sixth in the veterans' event.

Southwater's Stuart Aspinall and Gordon Smith finished first and third in their events at the South East mountain bike meeting.

National 24-hour champion Dave Shepherd (Rother Valley), from West Sussex, and Southern Counties 100-mile champion Keith Coffey (Bec CC), are among the hardy riders who will contest the Sussex CA's open 12-hour time trial on Sunday.

The event starts from Washington at 6am and the final stages during late afternoon will be on a circuit that includes Dial Post.
