In responding to Stephen Jackson's hot-headed comments about tram and bus spotters (Letters, July 25) with hackles raised, Peter GH Bailey (Letters, July 31) merely reinforces the stereotype he detests by demonstrating an inability to laugh at himself.

Perhaps he could learn a thing or two from Angus Deayton, although I recommend sticking to buses rather than descending to cocaine and call-girls.

Self-deprecation is endearing and reflects satire. Stephen's piece was masterfully satirical and it is he I would prefer to read.

Cheer up Peter, before you vanish up your own exhaust pipe.
