Supporters are being asked to step out to show the strength of opposition to proposals to move a breast cancer unit out of Brighton.

The Friends of the Nigel Porter Unit for Breast Care have organised a sponsored walk to raise money for the unit, which is based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

The unit is under threat of closure and could be transferred to the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath, despite opposition from more than 30,000 people who signed a petition in The Argus in October, following the announcement to move the unit.

The former Brighton Health Care NHS Trust wanted to move the unit to a bigger site so it could expand. Health chiefs said there was nowhere suitable in the city.

Despite this claim, Rosaz House was identified and received planning permission on July 3 from the city council to be the new home of a Brighton-based unit.

Health leaders will decide in September whether the unit will be built in Brighton or Haywards Heath.

The charity, the Friends of the Nigel Porter Unit for Breast Care, have organised the sponsored walk along the city's seafront on Sunday at 1pm.

The Brighton, Hove and Lewes Community Health Council (CHC) is supporting the walk.

CHC chairwoman Mo Marsh said: "The campaign so far has been very successful.

"We hope the decision to be made on September 27 will give the go-ahead for development for a brand new centre on the site of Rosaz House, now that any difficulties with the planning process have been resolved."

Sue Cleeve, acting chief officer of the CHC, said: "This is a great opportunity for the people of Brighton and Hove to show their support for keeping breast care services in the city."

The walk will be started by Labour MP David Lepper at the King Alfred Leisure Centre in Hove and will end at the Palace Pier.
