A quarter of a million people are expected to flock to Worthing's seafront extravaganza this weekend.

Worthing Seafront Fayre, one of the South's leading annual events, is packed with a programme of entertainment, much of which is free.

Highlights of the three-day event will include a jubilee Battle of Britain charity air show, a funfair, a Chieftain tank and a torchlight procession.

Organiser Jonathan Chowen, director and co-founder of Sussex Stationers, said: "We are expecting about 250,000 people at the fayre and the weather is supposed to be excellent.

"There will be lots of exciting activities."

The fayre kicks off with a French market and craft stalls at 10am tomorrow.

At Beach House Grounds, attractions include archery, a bungee cage and a free beach party concert, sponsored by Worth FM.

A spokesman for Worth FM, which is bidding for the new Worthing FM licence, said: "Featuring well-known bands and new talent, it is hoped that with Worth FM's intervention, this years seafront fayre will prove the biggest and most successful in the history of the town."

Other radio stations involved in the event include Splash FM and Southern FM.

Soldiers from across the South-East will demonstrate their skills and discuss army life.

Vehicles on show will include a Royal Artillery Striker, used to destroy enemy armour, and 17 Port Maritime Rigid Raider patrol crafts.

Visitors will be able to test their agility on the Prince of Wales's Royal Regiment jungle gym.

The fayre takes place annually on the last weekend of July to raise funds for local charities.
