A top quality spinner should be Sussex's priority when they strengthen the squad for next season, according to Chris Adams.

The Sussex skipper also says the county must consider recruiting him from overseas if that is their only option.

In the last week the club's committee have changed their stance on the proposal to allow counties to double their quota of overseas players to two from next season.

They voted in favour of it in April but have now decided to oppose the plan when the county clubs meet again to make a final decision at the end of the season. It is still likely to get the go-ahead though, and Adams believes the club would be foolish not to consider it as an option.

He said: "Morally I agree with the club's stance on this. We have a problem in the game because the floodgates are about to open in terms of the availability of players with EU passports.

"Personally I think it is wrong that you can play in one country and if it doesn't work out you can come over here and play first-class cricket, but that's European law for you and there is nothing we can do about it."

Following the death of Umer Rashid on the pre-season tour, off-spinner Mark Davis has been asked to shoulder the slow bowling burden and Adams believes he needs help.

"We're asking Mark to do an awful lot without any assistance," he added.

"Another spinner is definitely the priority for next season and they aren't around in English cricket, in fact we are miles behind in England in terms of spin.

"I rate Yorkshire's two off-spinners Richard Dawson and Andy Gray as the best in division one. Mark is on a par with Gray, but they wouldn't be pushing Murali or Harbajan Singh out of a world XI.

"If the first class counties vote for a second overseas player then you have the option to use it. Ignoring it would be like cutting off your nose to spite your face, you wouldn't be giving yourself the chance to put your best team on the park.

"My perfect team would be two overseas and nine players who are Sussex born and bred, but that is not going to happen so we have got to look at all the options available to us."

Mark Robinson and Matt Prior defied the Yorkshire bowlers for 4.2 overs on Saturday to secure a draw against the champions. Sussex stay fourth in division one ahead of the trip to third-placed Hampshire at West End on Wednesday.
