Letters from motorists make obvious the voting power they and the transport lobby have, which will make sure there will be no improvement in transportation until the roads become so jam-packed they are unusable.

Until such time, our balance-of-payments deficit will be aided by buying foreign cars and fuel. Pollution and ill health will increase, as will global warming, storms, drought, forest fires and flooding, causing loss of life and starvation across the world.

Rainforests will disappear, producing less oxygen and taking in less carbon dioxide.

Deaths and injuries on the roads will increase, especially as traffic in developing nations increases.

Alternatively, imagine Brighton and Hove without cars, gaining breathable air, less noise and dirt, fewer accidents, punctual public transport and healthier people.

The city could then be renamed Utopia.
