Two alleged hitmen were seen together on the day of Mohammed Raja's murder, a court heard.

Prosecutors recalled witness Peter Tong to give evidence to the Old Bailey jury yesterday.

Mr Tong previously told the court he saw Robert Knapp and David Croake together on a hot day in the summer of 1999, both with fresh burns to their skin.

The prosecution alleges Knapp and Croake were paid by millionaire tycoon Nicholas van Hoogstraten to murder Mr Raja on July 2 1999 and received the burns setting fire to the getaway van.

After killing Mr Raja, the pair drove to Mr Tong's home in Crayford, Kent. Croake and Knapp then went with Mr Tong's daughter Doreen to buy drugs, the prosecution said.

In re-examination Mr Tong said he was convinced he had seen Croake and Knapp on July 2.

His phone records showed on that day he had made two phone calls to his work at lunchtime to find out his shifts for the following day.

But under cross-examination he said his recollections were "vague".

The jury heard two phone calls to his work were also made in quick succession on June 16 and 21 and July 7 and 13.

Nicholas van Hoogstraten, 57, of High Cross Estate, Framfield, denies murder and conspiracy to murder 62-year-old Mr Raja.

Croake, 59, of Bolney Road, Moulsecoomb, Brighton, and Knapp, 53, of Co. Limerick, deny murder.

The trial continues.
