Adopting a dress standard is important to Jobcentre Plus (The Argus, May 24). The standard itself is very simple: Collar and tie for men and attire of a similar standard for women. Our teams have been made fully aware of this new requirement and given time to comply.

Jobcentre Plus is an organisation that advises customers about finding work and ensures support is available while people are not working. Presenting ourselves in a businesslike manner shows professionalism and respect for our customers, whether our staff are directly customer-facing or not.

Our dress standard is not dissimilar to that of banks and building societies and other customer service organisations. Our aim is to provide a professional service and the dress standard is an integral part of our service improvement programme.
