A horse had to be pulled free by fire crews after getting stuck in a bog.
The animal was rescued from marshy fields opposite the Marquis of Granby pub in West Street, Sompting, at 7.20pm last night.
It had wandered into the boggy area and then got trapped under the branch of a tree.
The alarm was raised by the horse's owner who called the fire brigade.
Worthing firefighters took two-and-a-half hours to free the animal by cutting away the tree.
They were helped by volunteers from an animal rescue charity in Storrington.
A brigade spokesman said: "What we think happened was that the horse went to have a drink of water, became more inquisitive and then probably got stuck. It was very shallow water."
He said: "It was difficult to get our vehicles near the horse because he was stuck about half a mile from the road."
