Coastguards retrieved the body of a man from the foot of cliffs.
Police were called after a walker spotted a blue rucksack at the top of Beachy Head, near Eastbourne, on Friday, at 2.35pm.
A team of cliff rescue coastguards was called to the scene along with the police helicopter.
The man's body was taken to Eastbourne District General Hospital.
Relatives were being informed today and formal identification was expected to take place this afternoon.
