A 23-year-old man was fighting for his life today after suffering a serious head injury outside a city nightclub.
Police said it was unclear whether the man was assaulted or whether he fell and hit his head.
Two men, 25 and 34, were arrested and later released on bail pending further inquiries.
The injury was suffered outside the Zap Club in Kings Road Arches, Brighton, between 1.45am and 2.10am on Sunday.
The victim, from Ruislip, north-west London, was undergoing surgery at Hurstwood Park Neurological Hospital in Haywards Heath.
His condition was said to be critical.
A team of officers, led by Detective Superintendent Ken Probert, was working on the case and an incident room has been set up at Brighton police station.
