Twelve people were led to safety after fire broke out in a block of flats.
Two teams of firefighters attended the blaze at the three-storey building in Pevensey Road, Eastbourne, after passers-by noticed smoke billowing from the ground floor.
None of the residents was injured but one firefighter needed hospital treatment after he was hurt trying to break into the building.
The flat, believed to be empty, was badly damaged and the building was smoke-logged.
The road was closed for almost two hours. A fire investigation team is looking into the incident.
