As a frequent visitor to Brighton and Hove, I care a good deal about what happens in the city. So I visited the West Pier public exhibition with some eagerness.

However, I could hardly believe a shoreline development is being planned that would rise nearly two storeys above the esplanade and stretch far along the Kings Road, completely blocking out much of the seafront.

I was also surprised to see Adam Trimingham's report (April 19) saying that a majority wanted modernisation.

While I was at the exhibition last Saturday, I heard visitors being told by representatives of St Mowden Properties that a renovated pier would not be possible without the extensive shoreline development.

Was the report by Adam Trimingham meant to be a copy of publicity handouts by St Modwen or a critical look at the proposed plans?
