Kevin Innes fired a chanceless unbeaten century to help Sussex Second XI gain a first innings lead of 71 in their three day clash against Surrey at Hastings.

The former Northamptonshire all rounder, who is on trial, smashed 18 fours off 149 balls in three hours at the crease as Sussex declared on 447-9 replying to Surrey's 376.

Sussex called a halt 45 minutes from the close with Innes 102, and Surrey openers Scott Newman (32) and Ben Scott (18) cut the deficit to only 15 by taking their side to 56 without loss.

Innes shared in a sixth wicket stand of 74 with Carl Hopkinson (79) and Stephen Ades (55) later joined him as 119 valuable runs were added for the eighth wicket Hopkinson stroked 11 fours off 106 balls and Ades included a six and six boundaries in a deserved half century.

Bas Zuiderent and Dominic Clapp earlier extended their opening stand to 98 when Clapp was taken at second slip off Phil Sampson for 44.

Zuiderent made 53 from 93 deliveries while Hopkinson and Will House shared a fifth wicket stand of 101 before House (50) was caught at the wicket off Miller for 50. House thumped eight boundries from his 69 deliveries.
