A partially-sighted pensioner was tricked into filling pots and pans with water while bogus water board workers ransacked his home.
Two wallets containing a total of £290 were stolen from the 91-year-old victim after two men called at his house.
A police spokesman said: "If you have an unexpected caller to the door, don't let them in.
"If you do open the door, make sure you use a chain and ask to see their official identification.
"Also, be a good neighbour and call the police if you see someone acting suspiciously."
The two men had Irish accents.
One was described as white, aged 35 to 40, 6ft tall, slim build with collar-length, dark hair and wearing a light blue top.
The second man was 5ft 8in tall and aged about 25.
