Lewes moved a step closer to becoming division two champions with a convincing 3-0 win at home to Barton Rovers which saw three players sent off.

John Palmer opened the scoring midway through the first half with an excellent low drive from 25 yards having been denied 15 minutes earlier with a fingertip save by Barton goalkeeper Brad Gillham.

Home player Germain Amanuel and the visitors' Dean Tallentire were dismissed after puishing and shoving each other after 34 minutes.

Barton were reduced to nine players nine minuites later when Richard Fisher was red-carded for an elbow on Joe Clark.

Fortunately football prevailed in the second half as Lewes increased their lead in the 58th minute. The speed of Sam Francis down the right flank provided the space for a low cross that was tucked in from close range by Chris Dicker.

Lee Newman completed the scoring with his 21st league goal of the campaign after being set up by Ross Venables eight minutes from time.

Second-placed Horsham maintained pressure on the Rooks with an incident-packed 3-0 home win over ten-man Arlesey Town. They are three points behind their Sussex rivals with two games left.

The visitors had Matt Turnbull sent off after 17 minutes for throwing a handful of dirt at Horsham's David Flemming.

Three minutes later James Bird was mistakenly booked for a foul committed on the lively Dean Harding by John Kirby who was forced to leave the field six minutes later with a suspected broken ankle.

Hornets scored their 100th league goal of the season when Steve Payne headed Horsham in front beyond former Hornets goalkeeper Martyn Patching six minutes before the interval after a Stuart Hardy cross had deflected off a defender's head.

Luke Gedling cleared off the line from Matt Corbould as Arlesey pressed after the re-start but Horsham regained control and Eddie French headed home a Lee Carney corner to make it 2-0 after 63 minutes.

Jamie Taylor celebrated winning the Horsham player-of-the-year award with an injury time goal, stabbing a Payne cross into the net.

Manager John Maggs said: "It was a nice way to finish our home fixtures.

"We weren't that good at times, but we got the result.

"It was always going to be a hard game. We've got two games left and we've got to win them."

Bognor gave their fans something to cheer about in the final division one home game of the season when they beat fellow high flyers Northwood 3-1 at Nyewood Lane.

With both sides just outside the promotion places, Rocks cemented a fourth-place finish.

Manager Jack Pearce said: "It's very pleasing to get the result for our fans in the last home game. We had been threatening a performance like that for some time, but just not getting the goals."

Charlie Balfe hit a post for Bognor before visting goalkeeper Andy Felton denied Matt Russell and Nicky Wyatt.

Bognor took the lead in the 55th minute when a Guy Rutherford cross was fired home by Wyatt.

Wyatt doubled the lead four minutes later when he rounded Felton after a ball from Richard Hudson.

Russell made it 3-0 on 61 minutes before pulling another effort wide.

The visitors scored a consolation goal in the 77th minute when a break down the left saw Ryan Ashe cross for the unmarked Lawrence Yaku to steer the ball home.

Wyatt was denied his hat-trick when Felton blocked his close range effort late on.

An early goal from Mark Knee proved enough to give Worthing their third win in the last four games at Windsor and Eton.

Knee, successfully switched from left back to striker seven weeks ago, headed his 11th goal unchallenged at the far post from a corner on the right by Ben Carrington.

Wasteful Worthing should have had a hatful against their bottom-of the-table opponents and poor finishing by the recalled Gavin Geddes let him down on a number of occasions.
