Parents and children have joined forces to raise cash for a skateboard park.

So far, they have raised £3,000 for the new ramps at Plumpton Green.

But they have to raise a further £12,000 for their sk8-pg project, which was boosted last Thursday when shop Fat Mamas, in Sydney Street, Brighton, donated a deck - the part of the skateboard which users stand on.

Steve Hayman, vice-chairman of the committee, got involved with the group last autumn because two of his sons are keen skateboarders.

He said: "There have been a few problems because kids have been skateboarding out on the streets so a couple of parents got together and called a meeting.

"We formed a committee to look into costing and find a site.

"We wanted the kids to be involved as well so we could prove to local residents they were responsible."

About 50 boys and girls are keen skaters in Plumpton Green but the nearest skate park is in Newick. After discussions with Plumpton Parish Council, it was agreed the group could use part of Plumpton playing fields so it set about raising funds.

Mr Hayman said: "What we are aiming to do is a fund-raising event every month.

"We are looking to budget about £15,000.

"We would like to be in a position where we do some excavation this year and, if we can get the rest of the money, to build early next year.

"A lot of organisations in the village have been very supportive.

"There are those who say the youth in the village hang around and get in the way and we have stressed the children have got to get off their backsides to help put this together."
