As soon as you walk through the doors at Worthing Hospital, you are regaled with information about how much missed appointments cost

the NHS.

My husband received an appointment recently in the post and I was on the phone for six hours trying to get a reply to have it changed since we are away on holiday on the date offered.

How much has this cost me? What is the point of giving a phone number if no one is there to answer it? If I only wanted to cancel, not postpone, why should I spend about a fiver in aborted phone calls? I am paying the minute the phone is answered by the main switchboard.

It is time the hospital took notice of the appropriate saying "Physician heal thyself" and provide staff to answer the phone so people are able to either cancel or alter appointments without all this hassle and expense.

What excuse can the hospital offer?
