A gardening club is appealing for sponsorship to take its innovative garden to a national show.

The Stanmer Gardening Club is one of ten groups nationally to be chosen to build a garden to be taken to the Hampton Court Flower Show in July.

In order to do this, the group, which has already put together the design for Kaleidoscope, a Garden for Young People, needs to raise £5,000.

The club is based at Stanmer Horticultural and Ecology Centre which is part of City College Brighton and Hove.

Helen Else, an ex-horticultural student and one of the two designers of the garden, said: "A lot of people have already shown interest in sponsoring us but nothing has been secured.

"The sponsorship need not come from one person and there are many benefits in sponsoring us.

"These include having a sponsor's name board and logo on the garden, Press coverage, sponsors' names in official show catalogues and information leaflets about the garden.

"We can also personalise bits of the garden to meet the sponsors' needs, for example, including logos or a business's colours with the design. We would be happy to discuss this further with anyone interested.

"It is anticipated there will be in the region of 180,000 visitors to the show so it will reach a large number of people."

Last year one of the club's students, Sharon Clark, won a bronze medal for a garden she and fellow students built at the Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show 2001.

Bridget Saunders, lecturer and co-designer of this year's garden, said: "We have called it Kaleidoscope, a Garden for Young People, because we want to raise the profile of gardening for young people.

"It will be exciting and attractive, with a colourful mosaic stepping-stone water feature, and fun activity areas. We found out that we had been selected in January and since then have been working hard developing the idea.

"Lots of people have already been really helpful and given their time voluntarily but we have got to a point now where we need to raise sponsorship to enable the garden to actually be built and taken to the show.

"We have involved local artists and businesses already, including a company called Bamboozled, and we are going to invite local primary schools to help us with the building of it."

Once the club has sponsorship, much of the garden will be made in sections and then constructed and planted at Hampton Court in the weeks before the show.
