A mother-of-two has saved a pool creche from closure - for the time being.

Council officers at Adur decided to shut the creche at Wadurs swimming pool at the Holmbush Centre, Shoreham, after a health and safety report said more staff were needed.

Councillor Julie Searle, member for the Southwick Green ward and a regular pool user, stepped in to protect the facility.

For nine years, babies and children, including Coun Searle's sons Craig, six, and Jon, two, have been supervised in safety while parents swim.

Now the creche has won a reprieve of at least two months after Adur District Council stumped up the money for another member of staff.

Coun Searle said: "I know quite a lot of mums who use it and it's so valuable for them. I'm really pleased we've got at least a two-month extension. It means people can have the service and actually get out during the day if they have small children.

"I feel I've achieved something by perseverance."

Creche supervisor Lyn King has been the only member of staff for the past five years.

She said: "I was very upset about it closing. It's a valuable place for mothers and they often say how lovely it is to have half an hour of their own."

Councillors will decide the long-term fate of the creche at a meeting on July 2.

Leisure services director Barry Newman said: "We contemplated postponing the service until the meeting but additional money has been given. I hope it will be kept open after July.

"I have every hope and confidence it will."
