Hundreds more streets and homes will come under the gaze of Sussex Police CCTV cameras.

Officers propose to introduce 16 more cameras across the county.

Six will be brought in to keep an eye on north Moulsecoomb, three in Seaford, two each in Littlehampton, Hastings and Crawley and one in Bexhill.

Special constables will be trained to operate the extra cameras.

In north Moulsecoomb the six cameras, costing a total of £274,385, are expected to be in place by June.

The cost will be met by the Government's New Deal for Communities scheme with the Home Office, Sussex Police and Brighton and Hove City Council.

A survey conducted on the estate showed 95 per cent of residents overwhelmingly supported cameras.

The cameras will be housed in blue domes on poles and it will be impossible to tell the direction they are facing.

They will be put up on St George's Hall, on shops in Barcombe Road, in Newick Road and near the children's playground in Chailey Road.

Sussex Police Authority chairman David Rogers said: "This is good news for us and it should send out a warning to those who are involved in crime and antisocial behaviour in Sussex that they are being watched."
