I don't understand all the fuss about this police dog. It was a dog, for goodness' sake, not a police officer.
If my dog (my good, faithful companion, incidentally) had bitten a chunk out of someone's ear, she would quite rightly be put to sleep.
I don't see the difference between a pet dog and a police dog. If a dog bites a person, it should be put to sleep, no matter what the circumstances.
Moreover, not only is it a moral obligation but, I suspect, a legal one.
