Robin Martin-Jenkins has given Sussex a boost four days before the start of the new cricket season.

The county's all-rounder has bowled competively for the first time since injuring his Achilles on the pre-season tour of Grenada nearly three weeks ago.

He sent down two spells in yesterday's friendly against Gloucestershire and will have another extensive workout in the nets today with overseas player Murray Goodwin who arrived at Hove yesterday.

Coach Peter Moores said: "We now have a squad with sufficient depth which means we don't have to risk anyone who is not ready. Everyone who takes the field at the Oval on Friday against Surrey will be fully fit and on the top of their game and hopefully that will include Robin."

Skipper Chris Adams is having treatment on a slight groin strain which may prevent him from bowling against Surrey, but he will definitely lead the side as Sussex make their bow in the first division of the County Championship.

Sussex were beaten by five wickets by Gloucestershire and they face intensive work in the nets between now and Friday.

Moores added: "Everyone has got something out of the two games we have had at Hove, but now is the time to step up to another level in preparation for Friday."

Sussex's target of 304 proved no problem for Gloucestershire yesterday as they coasted home with 17 overs in hand.

Matt Windows top scored with 67 while Craig Spearman, Chris Taylor and skipper Mark Alleyne also made half centuries.

Sussex's left arm pace bowler Paul Hutchison took 2-47 from 16 overs. Robin Martin-Jenkins dismissed New Zealander Spearman leg before to mark his comeback with the ball.

Scores: Sussex 303, Gloucestershire 306-5. Gloucestershire won by 5 wickets.
