A Council has agreed to pump an extra £36,000 into boosting safety at ponds and boating lakes after a toddler drowned.

Arun District Council's cabinet agreed to the extra funding for improving safety at all its lakes following the death of two-year-old Alexander Clark, who died in June last year.

He wandered out of an activity session at Littlehampton Sports Dome and fell into a boating lake in nearby Mewsbrook Park. After his death, the council commissioned a report from Rospa into water features at all its parks and open spaces.

Many of its recommendations are to be implemented by the council, which has already voted to spend £73,000 at the lake.

Councillors agreed to spend the extra £36,000 on safety at other lakes in the district, including Brookfield Park, Littlehampton, and the boating lake at Hotham Park, Bognor.

Roger Parsons, head of parks and landscapes at the council, said: "There is no such thing as an absolutely safe lake but we hope that by these works they will be even safer."

The money will be spent on repairs to the bank at the edge of the Mewsbrook Park lake to prevent tripping, along with extended fencing around the boating area.

The package also includes more warning signs and planting vegetation around parts of the lake to deter people from going near the water.

The council will also repair self-rescue chains which people can use to haul themselves out of the water and create safety points where signs and lifesaving equipment, such as buoys, are combined.

The work should be completed by December.

A verdict of accidental death was recorded at an inquest on Alexander, who had been at an activity session with his mother Nasrin, of Granville Road, Littlehampton.
