Worthing-based Saywell is a family business and a world leader in the manufacture and supply of aircraft spares.

It has a purpose-built UK depot and offices in Canada and the United States. The company has grown rapidly through acquisitions during the past three years and relies on the latest technology to meet the Just-In-Time requirements of its customers, round the clock.

Saywell was already beginning to feel the effects of a downturn in the airline industry before September 11 - and has now had to put plans for a new warehouse on hold until the outlook improves.

Managing director Peter Saywell said: "What we need this year is a period of stability with no major events nationally or internationally that will diminish confidence in air travel and the airline industry."

Mr Coward said: "Saywell will be keen that the Chancellor's measures help the economy stave off recession generally and help airline in particular.

"Gordon Brown is well aware of the difficulties facing the industry, so is unlikely to hit it directly with, for example, increases in airport tax."
