Extra buses will run on a popular route later this month as part of improvements to town and city services.

Brighton and Hove Bus and Coach Company said services on the busy number 7 route will run every six minutes during the day and every ten minutes in the evenings and Sundays.

Three new buses will come on to the service which links George Street in Hove with Brighton station and Kemp Town.

There will also be a new direct link from Peacehaven to Brighton Marina.

Roger French, managing director of the company, said: "This is in response to requests from passengers and the service will also have new low-floor buses."

The company will also restore services in the evenings between Brighton and Worthing following cutbacks by Stagecoach last year.

Mr French said: "We're taking a commercial risk in reintroducing evening journeys along the coast road between Shoreham and Worthing as an extension on weekday evenings.

"This will benefit Worthing people wanting to visit Brighton for a night out as there will be four journeys during the evening with the last departure from Churchill Square to Worthing at 10.56pm."

A special single fare of £1.30 will apply to these journeys.

The popular link between Brighton and Eastbourne gets a boost on Sundays with a new 20-minute frequency on service 713 which runs via Beachy Head.

Mr French said: "This has proved extremely popular in previous summers and, with financial help from the Sussex Downs Conservation Board, we have been able to expand the service."

New weekend routes will also operate to Stanmer Park and Ditchling Beacon as well as an improved service to Devil's Dyke thanks to funding from the Countryside Agency.

A new night service will provide a journey home for clubbers from West Street in Brighton to Lewes and Ringmer on Fridays and Saturdays at 2.25am.

City night buses will continue on Friday and Saturday but not on Thursday nights because of a lack of passengers.

Number 6 journeys will all terminate at Downs Park during the daytime instead of going on to Mile Oak.

This is because Sainsbury's, which has a store at West Hove, is directing funding they provided for this link into a new network of free buses in the area.

Other changes include an improved evening and Sunday service in many areas of the city.

Further details of the timetable, which comes into force on Sunday, are available from the web site at www.buses.co.uk or by calling 01273 886200.

Copies of times will be available on all company buses during the next few days.
