A sixth anniversary gig for renowned club night The Boutique turned into chaos at the newly revamped Brighton Dome.

Clubbers pushed and shouted inside the hall, refurbished at a cost of £22 million.

Around 2,500 paid £25 each to get into The Boutique's birthday gig, headlined by Fatboy Slim, on Saturday.

Around 1,500 people could watch acts including Midfield General in the Corn Exchange but only 1,000 at a time were able to get into the Dome Concert Hall to see top name DJs including Norman Cook and Timo Maas.

Crowds were left angry and frustrated, and security staff had to stop people from pushing their way in.

One steward said: "The crowds were getting very angry, and rightly so as they had paid £25 to get in. They tried to storm the doors.

"People who were already inside realised what was going on and knew if they left the room to get a drink or go to the toilet they would not get back in, so they were urinating against the walls.

"It was absolute chaos."

Partygoer Belinda Watson, 35, of Denton Drive, Brighton, said: "It was a nightmare.

"We were in the main auditorium for a while and then we popped out to get a drink. When we tried to get back in, we couldn't.

"Everyone in the Corn Exchange realised Fatboy Slim had come on and there was an almighty surge to get in to see him.

"We stood there for about 40 minutes, then finally got through but left because of the mayhem. We had all just had enough.

"Inside the Dome, people were going to the toilet in the auditorium itself because they did not want to have to go outside. It was horrendous."

Daniel Cronin, 28, of Montpelier Road, Brighton, said: "When we first got there, there were no problems. But I went to get a drink and to go back in took me about 25 minutes of queuing.

"At one stage people were trying to push the doors."

The gig was the second night of The Boutique's sixth birthday.

A spokeswoman for The Dome said: "We are aware there were problems and we are looking into them."

The show is reviewed in our leisure section today.
