A troubled theatre is set for a secure future if a bid to sell it is approved.

Hastings Borough Council's Cabinet will meet tomorrow to discuss options for the future of the White Rock Theatre in the town.

The council slashed much of its previous £700,000 subsidy as part of a cost-cutting programme.

But a bid from entertainment company Clear Channel Entertainments to manage the theatre for the next ten years is now likely to go ahead.

Following an eight-week review, head of leisure services Mike Marsh has recommended the offer should be approved.

He said: "The company is committed to providing a high-quality, broad programme for the theatre, including musicals, one-nighters, comedy, music and drama, opera and ballet, children's shows, an annual pantomime and orchestral and big band concerts.

"With a network of 29 venues the company anticipates increasing shows at the theatre and giving wider access to new products."

Mr Marsh has also advised councillors to turn down a bid to run the theatre as a non profit-making trust.

The plan was put forward by former East Sussex County Council leader Derek Norcross at the end of last month.

Last summer the council rejected recommendations from its best value committee members to close the theatre and rent out the building for other uses.

A report from the committee found the theatre had been failing for some time despite having had millions of pounds ploughed into it.

Tomorrow's meeting will take place in the town hall at 6pm.
