Although this is not a local matter, I would like to refer to the Selby train disaster, in which many people sadly lost their lives.

I agree the driver of the Land Rover should not have dozed off.

However, there should have been a greater length of barrier which, in all probability, would have allowed his vehicle to stay on the road and not topple over the embankment on to the railway line.

This driver received five years' imprisonment but this incident could have happened to any driver who was suddenly taken ill or had a heart attack.

I am of the opinion that whoever planned and built such a useless barrier is also entitled to a prison sentence.
