Basketball players have thrown their support behind a campaign to prevent children getting addicted to smoking.

The Brighton Bears will be meeting more than 1,000 children at schools across Sussex to highlight the benefits of not lighting up.

The drive has been organised by the team, West Sussex Health Authority and East Sussex, Brighton and Hove Health Authority.

Nick Nurse, head coach for the Bears, said: "We are pleased we can go into the schools to talk to the children about not starting to smoke.

"Once you start it's a habit that is difficult to stop so the message is don't start in the first place."

As well as a visit from players, schools taking part in the campaign will be invited to send some pupils to watch the Bears in action at one of their four league games this month.

Basketball camps are also planned and will take place at either the University of Sussex or The Triangle leisure centre in Burgess Hill on Saturday and on March 24, 30 and 31.

Club owner Romek Kriwald said: "It is good to be associated with the health authorities and the healthy lifestyle message."
