Dick Knight aside, I have never really been a big fan of the Albion chairmen I have come into contact with.

I ended up in the High Court against one of them because he didn't like supporters daring to question the way the club was being run.

The other two presided over the near destruction of the club and although in some quarters it seems fashionable to overlook what went on, the majority of supporters, myself included, will neither forgive nor forget the actions of Messrs Archer and Stanley.

Anyway I digress. I bring up the subject of chairman because I cannot help but admire Portsmouth supremo Milan Mandaric for his stand over the payment of the players' wages last week.

As a protest it was always going to be fairly short-lived, legally he was on a very sticky wicket. But it was refreshing in these days of football being money-mad that someone with a bit of clout was prepared to say: "Enough is enough."

The old adage 'A fool and his money are soon parted', might unkindly, be applied to Mandaric, bearing in mind that he has already ploughed over £22million into Fratton Park and for what return?

Portsmouth are rubbish and that is being polite. A succession of bad managers have compiled a squad of overpaid underachievers, annually camped in the wrong half of Division One.

Despite a temporary home and a delay over Falmer, Mandaric must look on with envy at where the Albion currently are. What could he have done with Micky Adams and £22million?

I do not begrudge the Albion players' wages because they earn every penny and that is mirrored by their success on the pitch.

But perhaps Mandaric's stand will send out a message to the greedy, overpaid players who are slowly strangling football that perhaps it is now time to get the spaceship back to Planet Reality.

Gazza hit the nail on the head last week when he admitted that when he leaves Everton, The Toffees will be able to get three good young players in for the money they are currently paying him. Kevin Campbell is allegedly on £42,000 a week. But it is all money well spent, look at where Everton are in the league!

An independent report stated last week that 15 League clubs are on the brink of bankruptcy, four could go within months. But perhaps it will take a Premiership club to go the wall before the people who matter start taking notice.

I do hope the fact that Peter Taylor has not put pen to paper on his contract does not prompt an outbreak of mass hysteria amongst the Albion faithful.

In this day and age contracts are not worth the paper they are written on. I know there is the issue of compensation, but you are not talking fortunes. If the club poaching go about getting their man in a certain way, they can get out of it anyway.

I firmly believe he will sign a contract when he is good and ready. Albion in Division One and the Falmer plans approved will be a far more appetising proposition, regardless of whether the current facilities are up to scratch.

Directors, managers and players all come and go. Deep down all the Albion fans can hope for from Peter Taylor is that when he does finally depart the club, be it next month, next year, or five years down the line, he leaves us in a better state than when he arrived.

Alas no all Sussex FA Vase semi final.

Although both our sides were beaten, neither were disgraced. Regardless of the result it was a great occasion at the Dripping Pan.

A big thank you to everybody at Lewes for looking after my BBC SCR producer and myself so well all day.

As if watching the Rooks lose was not bad enough, I was especially disappointed not to see Goldstone legend Johnny Crumplin get a run out.

I had even got my Football Genius T-shirt out of the cupboard in anticipation!
