Many drivers will sympathise with residents who are having to wait at least five months to get permits in the Brunswick parking zone in Hove.

But it was the shortages of spaces that convinced Brighton and Hove City Council a scheme was necessary a year ago.

Roads such as Lansdowne Street have several hundred residents and a few dozen parking spaces. Plainly, there will never be enough to go round.

Those who can would be well advised to give up their cars and rely on the excellent bus system with at least one a minute along busy Western Road during the day.

But the city council must do all it can to help those who feel cars are essential to their lifestyle.

Echelon parking, temporary permits and a review of yellow line restrictions are all worth considering.
