What does Roger French, managing director of Brighton and Hove Bus and Coach Company, have against handicapped people in small, accompanied wheelchairs?

All single-deckers have a sticker on the side barring manual wheelchairs. Why?

On Wednesday, February 27, we were stationary for a full five minutes at The Dip in Hollingdean trying to accommodate a double buggy.

I have nothing against young mothers but I know what the greater hazard would be in an emergency.

Mr French should remove all those stickers. It is gross discrimination against disabled and elderly people whose only outing is to do a bit of shopping.

Most of us cannot afford taxis or Dial-A-Ride.

-* Roger French replies: Far from having anything against people with disabilities, we are investing millions of pounds in new buses to accommodate wheelchair users and now have one of the most modern bus fleets in the country. Regretfully, our older buses are not authorised to take wheelchairs and, as highlighted by The Argus, new rules mean the location of grab poles makes it difficult to accommodate double buggies. Each bus now displays symbols by the door confirming the position to help customers.
