Mike Walsh (Letters, February 20) asks why a muddy field at Falmer is in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Because it is part of the open, rolling landscape that is the South Downs and while arable use limits its potential for recreation and wildlife, the position can improve with changing agricultural policy - which is more than could happen if we allow a concrete and steel football stadium to be built

in the countryside on the far eastern edge of Brighton and Hove.

A community stadium should be in the centre of the community - perhaps on the Brighton station site.
