Last night's Eastbourne derby between Borough and United was abandoned amid farcical scenes at Priory Lane.

The fourth round Sussex Senior Cup tie was plagued by floodlight problems and referee Henry De Winne eventually called the match off after 30 minutes following the third failure of the lights.

By that time Garry Wilson's Dr Martens eastern division side had raced into a commanding 2-0 lead against their lowly County League neighbours and Borough's Scottish manager was far from happy.

He said: "I'm very disappointed but what can you do? We had done part of the job and done well against the wind and the stop start situation.

"I'd maybe have given the lights one more go and given it until half time. The supporters were in the ground and my players wanted to continue."

The home team took the lead in the eighth minute as Darren Smith was adjudged to have handled John Westcott's cross from the right after Borough's tricky winger had nutmegged Carl Harris.

The spot kick was converted by skipper Daren Pearce who beat Mark Oldroyd with a low shot to the keeper's right.

Top scorer Matt Allen doubled Borough's advantage with a well-executed goal seven minutes later after being set up by Paul Stevens.

However both goals will be scrubbed from the record books after two of four the main sets of lights went out before kick off, again in the 15th minute and then once more 15 minutes later.

United manager Micky French joked: "I asked their supporters whether they had any 50 pence pieces they would like to put in the meter.

"We'll have a chance to regroup for the re-arranged match. I thought the penalty decision was very harsh especially so early in the game."
