A man was jailed for five months and banned from driving for five years after he was found sitting in a car while over the limit.

Wayne Bristow, 21, formerly of Pier Road, Littlehampton but now of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to three offences of vehicle interference on October 25 last year and one of being in charge of a car with excess alcohol on October 26.

Gail Purdy, prosecuting, told Worthing Magistrates' Court how a witness heard a male voice, looked out of the window and saw a man delving in the boot of a Maestro car in St Andrew's Road, Tarring.

She said the neighbour got dressed, went outside and saw Bristow in the driver's seat of another car.

He ignored the neighbour, got out of the car and the police were called.

They found Bristow in the driver's seat of a third car, a Ford Sierra, in Upton Road, Tarring.

Ms Purdy said: "He was sweating profusely, smelt intoxicated and his eyes were glazed."

The court heard he admitted drinking seven pints of lager, each followed by a shot, and was taking anti-depressants.

Ms Purdy said: "He could not remember anything as a result of this."

Bristow had been disqualified from driving for three years by Horsham magistrates in February last year.

District judge Paul Tain told him a custodial sentence was inevitable due to the "multiplicity of offences".

He said Bristow would have to retake his driving test after five years' disqualification.
