Six police officers have received awards after preventing a drunken knifeman from harming his family.

The officers were called to a house in Ifield, Crawley, after the 28-year-old man grabbed three kitchen knives during a domestic row.

He threatened his wife and children, aged 18 months and three years, and slashed his wrists.

Sergeant Sue Pryor and PCs Karina Gill, Kale Lincoln, Rob Lovell, Jane Phillips and Kevin Smith were unable to persuade him to drop the knives as he threatened to stab his wife, himself and any police officer who entered the house.

The officers spayed him with synthetic pepper and overpowered him. He was later imprisoned for four months for affray.

All the officers received divisional congratulations.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Ambler said the officers had prevented the man from causing serious harm to himself and his family.

He praised Sgt Pryor's leadership and her ability to assess a situation quickly and take the appropriate action.

A total of 20 awards were made to officers, members of the public and wardens.
