Gatwick bookshop assistant Waynne Nel has gone into the publishing business to help parents.

He is producing four editions a year of Grapevine, a free community guide for children and parents in Crawley and Horsham.

The guide is filled with lists of schools, nurseries, childcare groups, leisure facilities, local groups and sports activities in the towns.

Mr Nel, 38, of Broadlands, Horley, is working part-time at BooksEtc in the South Terminal to help fund the magazine, which ran at a loss of £3,000 last year.

He said: "It is my hobby but I am hoping to sell enough advertisements to break even.

"I don't expect to make a profit. I do it because I believe in it."

Mr Nel brought his family from South Africa to live in Horley two years ago after his wife got a job with Air Miles.

He said: "We decided to come to England because we didn't want to bring up our two children in what is becoming a hostile environment.

"When we arrived, we were given a copy of a similar magazine for the Reigate area and we found it a great help."

Grapevine is available from libraries, leisure centres, County Mall shopping centre, Crawley, and estate agents.
