Skipper Henry Goodburn will demand his Haywards Heath side remain switched on for the full 80 minutes after they suffered cruel defeat on Saturday.

Heath were 16-5 up at one stage in the second half at home to London One title-chasers Basingstoke but eventually lost 27-19.

The visitors scored 15 points in the final seven minutes to continue their pursuit of leaders Havant.

Goodburn said: "Overall I am encouraged by how we played. I thought we dominated 25 minutes of the second half but we have go to do it for the full 40.

"In the end, Basingstoke's National League experience made the difference. They knew exactly how to play the final minutes, even under a lot of pressure."

The outstanding Stuart Charnely struck three superb penalties to give Heath a 9-5 half-time lead but they had chances to score tries, all revolving around Goodburn's work on the left wing.

The best of them saw the skipper step inside a couple of tackles and send Tom Hills charging to the line, only for the referee to rule he had not grounded the ball as he was tackled beneath the posts.

Visiting lock Simon Drawbridge got over after good driving play.

Heath were more effective going into the wind after the break and Damien Lyall went close before Alex Meredith somehow forced his way over at the flag.

Charnely converted from touch but Chris Norton replied with Ian Calder converting.

Charnely's penalty stretched the lead to 19-12 and that was how it looked like staying until Heath twice failed to control their own lineout ball and Nigel Hooker and Matt Evans were driven over from close range. Calder added a conversion plus a last minute penalty.
