Cameron Johnson believes confidence is the key factor as Lewes prepare to take on Tow Law Town in the last 16 of the FA Vase next Saturday.

Jimmy Quinn may have been critical of the way Lewes have been playing in recent weeks but Johnson admits the Rooks are in good shape for their latest cup adventure.

He said: "We can definitely go further in this. If everyone is firing on the day, we can beat anyone."

Quinn, who prefers not to shout off about his side's chances, might not welcome Johnson's faith but the versatile midfielder knows what he is talking about.

Having won promotion and the Senior Cup last season, Lewes are now top of Ryman League Division One and enjoyed a run to the first round of the FA Cup this season, culminating in a 2-0 defeat at Stoke.

Johnson said: "Our season has been superb. As a team Jimmy doesn't think we are playing well but the manager is never going to be happy.

"We don't care what opposition we have. We are confident we can beat anyone on our day. No opposition is too big for us."

Johnson, 26, a central midfielder who can also play centre back, was used as a right-wingback at Stoke and admits it is a day he will never forget.

He said: "That is the highlight of my career. We all responded so well that day, it couldn't have been better.

"If we hadn't worked as a team, we could have been on for a big hiding. We are such a good team together and that is what pulled us through.

"We have a young side apart from Thommo (Paul Thomsett). The lads have gained so much experience over the last couple of years, gaining promotion and winning the Senior Cup. This year we have taken it forward.

"We take games to teams from the off and teams can't handle us. That is what happened at Kidsgrove."

Johnson admits Tow Law, the club which launched the career of Chris Waddle, will be a tough proposition but he is looking forward to it.

"At this stage all the sides will be good and all you can ask for is a home draw. If you get a home draw you can be halfway there," he said.

"I have had a lot of injuries since I have been at Lewes but this year has really gone well. I am scoring goals at the moment which I haven't really done before.

"My confidence is booming at the moment and it shows on the pitch."

Lee Newman and Sam Francis look set to be handed the two striking berths against Tow Law following the sudden departure of top scorer Dominic Shepherd to Withdean.

Ross Venables seems certain to miss the match with an ankle injury he picked up at Kidsgrove in the last round.
