A National Trust garden is asking people to dig deep and unearth any unwanted foreign notes and coins to help in an appeal.

People can donate their change to Sheffield Park Garden, near Haywards Heath, to help support its Planting for the Future appeal, launched last year to replace trees lost in the storms of 1987 and 1990.

Visitors can also enjoy a lakeside walk at the 120- acre landscape garden and shop in the National Trust store, which is holding a sale until mid-January.

Visitor services manager Sue Hann said: "We need to plant 9,000 trees to preserve the distinctive character of the estate in an ever-changing environment."

The gardens are open at weekends from 10.30am to 4pm, with the last admission at 3pm.
