Albion chief executive Martin Perry has reacted angrily to Chesterfield chairman Ian Yeowart's claim that Withdean is not up to scratch for League football.

Trouble marred Friday night's 2-2 draw with the Spireites with Sussex Police investigating verbal exchanges between the visitors' manager Nicky Law and Albion supporters, as well as a scuffle in the dressing room area after the match.

Law has denied he was to blame for the incidents while Yeowart also claimed assistant manager Ian Banks was hit by an object thrown from the crowd.

Perry said: "I think Chesterfield have protested too much and I am very scornful of their comments.

"However, no doubt they will be top of the queue to sign our petition for a new stadium."

He added: "We have played 80 matches at Withdean with no problems. I believe Chesterfield should look at their own behaviour before they start accusing anyone else.

"What is the state of Saltergate at present? Pots and kettles spring to mind!"

Chief Inspector Ian Davies, the match commander, has jumped to the defence of security measures at Withdean.

He said: "The stewarding was excellent and they significantly contributed to averting what could have degenerated into a serious incident.

"I would like to express my thanks and praise of Albion and the stewards that act on their behalf from Ecovert. I think they performed admirably and managed to deal positively and sensibly with what potentially was a very serious incident.

"The standard of behaviour of Brighton supporters in general terms has been excellent. The vast majority on Friday night behaved impeccably."
