A 28-year-old Frenchman was run over and killed by a refuse truck, an inquest heard.

Stephane Aineto, of Upper Lewes Road, Brighton, had been out for the night with friends but was alone when the accident happened in the pedestrian zone of East Street, Brighton, early on July 29.

Mr Aineto died from multiple injuries minutes after the collision with a seven-and-a-half tonne truck.

Tests showed he had drunk a high level of alcohol and was more than three-and-a-half times over the legal drink-drive limit.

Police believe he was run over by a rear tyre.

No criminal proceedings will be taken against the truck driver.

PC Chris Burt said there were no witnesses despite it being a busy summer evening and the accident would remain a mystery.

He said Mr Aineto, who worked as a kitchen porter at Brighton College, may have stumbled and fallen under the wheel.

Driver Richard Warren, of Western Road, Brighton, told the hearing he was on his regular night-shift with a colleague emptying the street bins when the accident happened at about 2.15am.

He did not see Mr Aineto before the accident but he felt a bump, the inquest heard.

Brighton and Hove coroner Veronica Hamilton-Deeley said Mr Aineto died as a result of an accident.

She did not believe the fact the truck passed through no-entry signs to enter East Street had caused or contributed to the death of Mr Aineto.

But she was concerned that ignoring the signs could cause an accident in the future and will write to Brighton and Hove City Council.
