A man who was shot is talking to police from his hospital bed to help them piece together what happened to him.

The 30-year-old victim was walking in Ivory Walk, Bewbush, Crawley, at around 8.25pm on Tuesday when a car pulled up and he was shot in the chest.

A large, dark-coloured saloon car was seen speeding away from the area heading in the direction of the A264.

The victim was taken to hospital and underwent emergency surgery.

Neighbours opposite the block of flats where the man was shot reported hearing three loud bangs at the time and some initially thought children were playing with fireworks.

Sgt Stuart McCall said: "We are still working on it, pursuing inquiries and talking to the victim.

"We have finished house-to-house inquiries and a number of people have rung in so far."

The victim's condition remained stable and he would be in hospital for some time. Officers were considering all possibilities for a motive.

Police are not releasing details of the victim or which hospital he is in.
