Leasehold reform which is long overdue is on the way, says Labour MP David Lepper.
He was telling a meeting at Hove Town Hall tonight that the Government is determined to press ahead with changes to archaic laws.
Mr Lepper, MP for Brighton Pavilion, said: "These laws make life a misery to so many of the 25,000 leaseholders in Brighton and Hove."
The new Commonhold and Leasehold Reform Bill now going through Parliament would give leaseholders new rights to take over the management of their flats and to buy the freehold.
It would also introduce commonhold in which residents of blocks collectively own the whole building as well as their flats.
Mr Lepper said: "I think the Government should go further than that and set a date by which all new blocks of flats must be commonhold rather than leasehold."
He also wants a national scheme to control managing agents.
