Kevin Hemsley, Albion youth's head boy, hopes to graduate as a professional in the New Year.
The 19-year-old central defender is in his third and final year of a scholarship.
Hemsley, who has captained the under-19s, said: "This is the big season for me. I feel I'm improving my all round game.
"I've been a little frustrated by not playing more than a couple of reserve games. When I did I believe I did okay despite it being more physical and faster than in the youth team.
"I was a bit nervous when Micky Adams left because he knows all my good points, although he knew my bad ones as well! But the new gaffer (Peter Taylor) has a reputation for encouraging young players so I'm keeping my fingers crossed it works out."
Hemsley, from Crawley, is in his fifth season with the club after being spotted by Albion centre of excellence coach Vic Bragg playing for Sussex Schools.
Martin Hinshelwood, director of youth, said: "Kevin's been as good as gold. He must try to stay relaxed and not worry about what a big season it is for him and then we will see the best of him. We're likely to make a decision in February or March."
