Worthing rider Chris McNamara upset the form book when he finished second in the Brighton Excelsior senior cyclo-cross race at Wild Park in Brighton.

The race was won by Surrey rider Matthew Spurgin.

It was also the fourth of five events counting towards the Sussex Championship and McNamara (Team Synergy) finished ahead of Brighton's Jonathan Sharpe, the league leader and defending champion.

Stuart Fritter (Wigmore), the current London League leader, was third. Andy Seltzer (East Grinstead) placed fourth, Carl McDonagh (Brixton) fifth and Sharpe (Cycleweb) finished sixth. Doug Fox (Crawley Wheelers and Chris Field ( VC Etoile) were seventh and eighth.

After the first of the nine laps, Spurgin was already in the lead, followed by Sharpe and Seltzer.

McNamara then came through the field and overtook Seltzer and Sharpe during the fifth lap to slot into second place.

The final Sussex League event takes place at Brighton's Dorothy Stringer School on January 27.

Sharpe, who is still in pole position ahead of Seltzer, said: "I haven't been able to train all week due to a virus but the league this year is based on each rider's best four out of five performances. I think I've done enough already to keep the title."

The Wild Park under-10s race also had a big field that was dominated by riders from outside the country. Susan Bryant, from Derenth, won with Jack Smith (Brighton Mitre) fourth and Neil McClelland (VC Londres), from Upper Beeding, finished in sixth place.

The 21st Century Airports club are hoping to pedal into the Guiness Book of Records this Friday by setting a new record for the number of miles covered on competition rollers in 12 hours.

The present record stands at 726 miles. The sponsored attempt for charity will take place in the concourse of the South Terminal at Gatwick Airport, starting at 6am.
